GATO is a (yet to be released) collection of demos, documentation and plugins that aims to make implementing accessibility features easier for Godot games. Check it out soon in Github/Codeberg!
This project’s focus is covering the needs of developers that want to make their games more accessible. Not only does an accesible game allow you to access a bigger pool of players, it also promotes inclusion and fairness for players with functional diversity.
Our aim is to establish a standard of accessibility that benefits both players and creators. And we think we will be able to achieve this with three main pieces:
Each demo contains a minigame with accessibility issues. They define the issue and explain what makes it inaccessible by simulating the experience of a person that suffers that inaccessibility. Each demo has a number of settings, which you will be able to tweak during the gameplay to try the limitations. That way you can build an intuition of how players feel while playing the game.
Afterwards, a solution for that issue will be shown and explained: why does it help and how does it work? Also, this project will be open sourced, so our aim is for you to be able to copy and paste the code into your project. Re-using it makes it easier for you to implement!
When the game is over, you will have access to the controls. This will allow you to explore freely with the simulation, so that you can test your understanding and form a better intuition!
